Following up on Jen’s email….  What a weekend at the Youth National Rowing Championships in Folsom California that spand elation to heartbreak for the five different crews competing with rowers from Rye High School.

For Rye Crew the highlight of the weekend was the men’s double manned by senior Grant Janart and junior Jim Palmer. Even sitting seat here in Rye watching of live feed on YouTube you could share and hear the excitement of the Rye parents cheering as their boat won the first medal for Rye Crew at the Youth Nationals, earning a well deserved silver.  To add to the excitement the crew had a come-from-behind blitz to pass the lead boat within 100m of the finish until Saugatuck caught a shot of adrenalin and pulled back into the lead over the line.

This was the second time Rye’s men’s coxed-four has been at the Youth Nationals.  This year junior Kiefer Mueller and senior Ryan Costa join veterans Janart, Palmer and cox junior Ally Sullivan.  Racing against a large field they finished 4th in the C-Finals and 16th overall.  Based on time of the three finals events, they stood 13th in the nation.  Grant Janart and Ryan Costa are graduating and attending Univ. of Virginia and Univ. of Michigan respectively. We hope to see Palmer, Mueller and Sullivan back again next year! The closely fought C-Finals also had the heartbreak of the weekend.  Row America Rye, despite being a young program, successfully qualified a coxed-four stroked by Rye senior Hutch Bryant.  About a third of the way through the race, sitting in third place and advancing, the crew caught a boat-stopping crab.  Despite a quick recovery and restart, they were unable to regain their position.  But they showed their stuff by rowing hard through the finish and even reveling in what they recognized to be still a fantastic experience. On another high, Rye was blessed with yet another silver medal!!  This one came from the Greenwich Crew women’s double with Rye High senior Melissa Curtis of Rye and Alex Slabbert.  Melissa, an alumni of Rye Crew, will be attending Princeton next fall. The fifth boat of the weekend was another Greenwich Crew boat, a lightweight eight including Rye High juniors Brakeley Bryant and Julia Davis.  Finishing 4th in the Petite Finals, ranks their boat 10th in the nation. With only one rower as well as the cox graduating this year, we hope to see these girls again next year in Sarasota Florida.
