Spring 2015 is Upon Us!!

Rye_GarnetsThis season there will be tryouts for the RHS Crew team because we are limiting our size to 80 student-athletes. Of course, if we do not have 80 trying out then we will not have to worry about selections except under certain circumstances which will be explained below.

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT EVEN IF A CHILD IS NOT SELECTED TO THE RYE HS TEAM THERE WILL BE OTHER PROGRAMS THAT THEY WILL BE PLACED IN THAT ARE OFFERED BY RAR IF HE/SHE SO CHOOSES. These programs will be development programs to teach beginners or for more experienced athletes to further develop the skills, strength and fitness levels of experienced rowers. Please know that if a child wants to row there will be a place for them.

RHS Crew Boys and Girls Teams:

BOYS:

  • 50 boys*
  • One third reserved for Freshman / Novice team
  • Two thirds reserved for JV / Varsity team
  • Total will include both rowers and coxswains
  • This season only, seniors that have been with the team for multiple years will be exempt from the selection process provided they make the full season commitment.

GIRLS:

  • 30 girls*
  • One third reserved for Freshman / Novice team
  • Two thirds reserved for JV / Varsity team
  • Total will include both rowers and coxswains
  • This season only, seniors that have been with the team for multiple years will be exempt from the selection process provided they make the full season commitment.

* If you are asking “why the 80 rower limit?” or “why not an equal amount of boys and girls?”…First, over the last few seasons we have had similar numbers and we, the coaches, school, and parent/booster club feel that this is a manageable number for the travel and other logistics involved. As coaches we also feel that 80, particularly when the boys and girls teams equalize, is an adequate amount of rowers to structure a team that consistently develops younger rowers and produces competitive varsity boats. Second, since the team began in 2007 there has consistently been more boys trying out than girls. For example, we had 22 girls on the team last fall simply because 22 tried out. We want the team to equalize eventually, but to bring in too many inexperienced rowers in one season will hold back the experience rowers as the new ones learn to row, which is very difficult. We are using 30 as a goal for the girl’s team this season as we expect a few spring-only rowers to return and we feel we can manage adding a few new and inexperienced rowers without slowing down the team’s training. This potential increase on the girl’s side means reducing the boy’s side which will be a difficult task indeed.
