Men’s 4+ Triumphs at Mercer Lake Sprints

West Windsor, NJ – Excitement was in the air for this year’s Mercer Lake Sprints/ISA Sculling Championships as Rye High School rowers won 8 medals, triumphing over rowers from 39 schools and clubs around the East Coast who gathered to compete in Mercer County Park.  In one of the most thrilling races of the day, RHS Crew men’s varsity 4+ (seniors Brendan Faries, Kiefer Mueller, Jim Palmer, Jack Smith and coxswain Ally Sullivan) came from behind to defeat Saugatuck in the 2,000 meter race by less than 1.5 seconds, finishing is 7:29:9.  “Our boat went out strong but steady in the beginning, so even though we were about a boat’s length behind first place with the last couple hundred meters to go, the guys had no trouble bringing up pressure for the sprint as the other boat started to burn out.  We passed them and won,” says Ally Sullivan, who cox’d the boat to victory.

Men’s coach Stan Nelson, women’s coach Catharine Labine and novice coaches Peter Furest and Aleks Rodovic could not have been prouder of all the rowers and the team’s overall performance during their first regatta of the season. In addition to the varsity men’s 4+ boat winning first place, RHS Crew won the following medals in the finals of their competitive races: 1st place in the men’s varsity single (Jim Palmer); 3rd place in the men’s varsity pair (Brendan Faries and Kiefer Mueller); 2nd place in the men’s varsity straight four event (Clem Borgogni, Tyler Clickner, Dan Philip, Jack Smith); 1st in the men’s novice 8+ (Troy Gilman, Andy Gomez, Jack Hartman, Eduardo Malespin, Hall Luthringer, Jimmy Cronin, Timothy Rudolph-Math, Alex Farres, coxswain Blake McGowan); 3rd  place men’s novice 4x event (Hall Luthringer, Alex Farres, Timothy Rudolph-Math, Jimmy Cronin); 2nd place women’s novice 4x (Shoshana Daniels, Samantha Herzog, Shannon Ryan, Nola Storey); 3rd place men’s 2nd novice 8+ (Ward Bradt, Reagan Doran, Joe Melfi, Chris Mullane, Robert Nelson, Callum Simpson, Miles Goldman, coxswain Chrissy Nisi).

The RHS Crew team will travel to Saratoga, NY to compete at the Saratoga Invitational in Saratoga Springs, NY on April 25 and 26, 2015.
